My dryer is in the garage of a 1950s ranch and the vent is only a few feet long. Does that even need cleaning?

Short runs clog too, and in these houses they often clog worse. A 5 to 10 foot sidewall run through the garage wall sounds harmless, but most of these homes still have the original flexible foil transition piece between the dryer and the wall. Modern dryers are much deeper than what those laundry alcoves were built for, so the foil gets shoved into an S-bend or flattened outright when the machine is pushed back. Lint piles up right at the crush point. We see this constantly in the postwar tract housing across Sunnyvale, and the fix is usually cleaning the run plus swapping that foil for rigid or semi-rigid metal.

I'm in a townhome near El Camino with a stacked washer-dryer in a hallway closet. How does that work?

Differently from a garage setup, and it takes longer. Those interior closets vent through a concealed run in a wall or shaft, sometimes going up a floor or two before it exits. We work from the dryer end with a rotary brush on a flexible rod and, when we can reach it, verify from the exterior or roof termination. In stacked units the dryer usually has to come out of the closet to get a clean shot at the duct, so we plan for that. If the termination is on a shared wall or roof section the HOA controls, we'll tell you what we could and couldn't access rather than guess.

What goes wrong with vents around here, given we don't get freezing weather?

No freeze risk on the valley floor, so we almost never see the ice and frost-related problems other regions deal with. What we do see: crushed foil transition duct behind deep dryers, disconnected joints inside walls in the older apartment and condo stock, termination flaps stuck open or missing so birds and rodents get in, and long concealed runs in podium and townhome construction that were never cleaned after the building was finished. The other big one is rental turnover. A unit can change tenants several times and nobody thinks of the dryer vent, so it comes to us with years of buildup and a dryer that runs multiple cycles to dry one load.

How soon can you get out here, and do you do same-day?

Sunnyvale is compact and flat, so travel between jobs is short and we can usually offer something within a couple of days. Same-day happens when a slot opens or someone cancels, and it's more likely for a straightforward garage sidewall run than for a stacked closet unit in a multi-story building, which needs more time on site.
