Both happen here, and Los Gatos sees more cap damage than anywhere else we work because of the oak and redwood canopy. If the housing is sound and only the damper flap is stuck with needle duff and lint, we clean it, free the flap and leave it working. If the cap has been crushed, if a rodent or bird has chewed or packed its way in, or if wasps have built inside the hood, replacement is usually the honest answer. A cap with a broken damper on a wooded lot just re-fills with duff and nesting material within a season, so patching it isn't doing you a favor. What goes wrong with dryer vents in Los Gatos homes?

It splits by where in town you are. On the hillside two-stories above downtown, laundry sits upstairs or mid-level and the duct runs 25 to 35 feet through the attic to a roof jack. Those long vertical-ish runs shed lint the whole way, and the roof end collects leaves and needles from above, so you get blockage building from both directions. In the older downtown-area Victorians and craftsman houses, laundry is in a basement or on a service porch and the duct threads a long way between joists on a raised foundation, often with old flex and more elbows than anyone would design today. The valley-floor ranches with garage laundry are usually the simplest, but garage runs get crushed behind shelving and appliances. How quickly can you get out here, and can you do it the same day?

Los Gatos is at the far south end of our service area, so we tend to group appointments in town rather than run single calls up the hill. Same-day does happen, most often when we already have a Los Gatos route that day and someone has an opening. If your dryer has stopped drying or you're smelling hot lint, say so when you call, because that moves you up. For a routine maintenance clean, booking a few days out gets you a better time window and lets us plan for roof access if your termination is a roof jack.
